Following a deafening DJ set of alternating hardcore and Zeldaesque midi-doom, BJ Nilson kicks off the grimmdom with a thunderous collage of ominous storm and animal sounds. The textures expand and contract over the next half hour, merging into a thunderous and haunting maze of tones that break in eardrums perfectly for the bleak assault to come.

Sunn O))) – tonight a quartet of O’Malley, Anderson, Steve Moore and Attila Csihar – appear grimm-robed and veiled in a near-opaque fog of dry ice. Cyclopean guitar tones pummel bodies with thunderous resonance like a sonic jacuzzi. Sunn O))) lumber through 3 of the 4 tracks on “Monoliths & Dimensions” like a four headed dragon with a hangover. Attila projects himself into the stage-front smoke machine like a demonic batman pope. “Agartha” resolves itself into an extended throat singing section before the O’Malley & Anderson bring back the punishing flood of drone with “Hunting & Gathering (Cydonia)”.

Atilla’s vokills throughout are suitably WTF, switching between a Hungarian vampire monologue, guttural retching, wounded animal whine, black metal cackle and Tuvan throat gymnastics. Moore switches between a analogue synth drone harmony, a twinkling fender rhodes and a trombone. As the immense volume appears to have reached a doomscendo, a German sounding chap shouts in my ear “You have no idea how exciting this is for a physicist!”. Attila then reappears for “Big Church”, having swapped his warlock robe for what appears to be a post-apocalyptic, mummified statue of liberty costume, with a mirrored cape and what looks to me like tippex all over his head. And lasers shooting out of his fucking fingers! Fucking Awesomes!
