For a line-up playing out of order comes a review written out of order. First up are headliners Lucky Delucci (playing 3rd out of 4 bands). Remember that Wall of Sound business that murderer came up with? Well imagine a wall made out of jelly, pebble-dashed with those little Malteser shaped poos you do sometimes and you’ll get the Lucky Delucci version. I’m sure the common problem of reproducing the intimate sounds of a recording played a part, but with 17,000 instruments on stage, sound definition was a problem which ended in a bit of a muffled mess.

Then come Evening Chorus opening the show. These self confessed folksters are certainly well named as the four piece produced a simple, strong, vocal-driven sound which reminded of a slightly less loved-up Noah and the Whale. Evening Chorus are the kind of band you can take home to your parents; warm, sincere, organised and they won’t let you down.

Perhaps Silver Gospel Runners shimmied up from 3rd on the bill to headliners because this was apparently their last ever gig. Perhaps this fact also explains the amount of unintelligible banter/inter band-member talk going on on stage. Also, SGR seem to be another band who can’t say no to an extra instrument or two, ’Can I get more from the accordion and glock, please’, ‘You won’t like it’, says the sound man, ’I’ll do it, but you won’t like it’. I couldn’t tell the difference.

Last but of course not least come Alphabet Backwards playing second. Undoubtedly the stand out performance of the evening, this London-ish based band brought charm, exuberance, energy and finger wagging to the evening. Catchy vocals, strong rhythm and a lot of knob-twiddling keyboard business cut a swath through the crowd chatter that signalled less interest in the other bands on offer tonight. Also, the backing singer looked mental.
