Recently I seem to be going to gigs blind, attending on the strength of a faithful promoter or unexpected good mood. I knew Peter Broderick, Copenhagen via Portland OR, was supposed to play with sprawling Danish orchestro-indie outfit Efterklang in Cardiff last year, but wasn’t allowed in the country. One listen to his album (alright, I went half-blind) passed me by a little but sounded Nice Enough in an okay sort of way – pretty much the same effect an Efterklang CD has on these ears, whereas live they were a total joy.

The Gentle Good tames the chatting friday night crowd with his now familiar well-crafted traditional capital-F Folk. Cementing his reputation I am actually making up right now that he is never not great.

Turn-out was surprisingly huge and increasingly appreciative for Broderick’s gentle repetitive looping (always with purpose, and not as gimmick), mixing violin/piano/electronics/mini guitar/the saw/various gadgets n switches, alongside self-harmonies. These little innovative and improv elements set him apart from the more excitement-free (vocal) contemporaries Bon Iver, Jose Gonsales, you know the sort. Whilst the occasional looped mistake and missed cue add to his charm.

In Summary: The Internet informs me he is 22 years old. Which is honestly, fucking ridiculous.
