Mel is one of the three good eggs behind Modern Life Is Rubbish, the Cardiff club night that finds honest good times in 90s indie revival. Plus! 2010 was the year long-running twee-ers Little My called it a day (best wake ever etc) and guess what – Mel was one their animal-eared number too.

==================

Recorded music highlights:

From what I can remember my recorded music highlights would be the recently released ‘Root For Ruin’ by Les Savy Fav, and the Gindrinker/Joy Of Sex ‘Split Definitives EP’ was definitely a highlight. Two amazing local bands recorded on one disc. Happy days. Surfer Blood’s ‘Astro Coast’ is definitely in my top ten of the year. I’ll probably get laughed at but also ‘A New Athens’ by the Bluetones! Good indie pop. I’m finding it hard to remember what has been released so I’ll leave it at that!

Live music highlights:

It’s been a blinding year for live music for me. Some of the many highlights include Pavement at the Brixton Academy followed by Pavement in Barcelona just a few week later, plus Les Savy Fav and watching Tim Harrington’s party tricks twice this year too. Jens Lekman at the Union Chapel was a definite highlight. I was gutted as myself and Graf had to leave slightly early to run to get the last train back to Cardiff. It was well worth it though. The last ever Little My gig (wake!) was a live highlight that I was personally involved in. We had an amazing evening but it was really sad too. Good to go out with a bang though. Watching locals Los Camp in a packed out venue in Barcelona was also a highlight. Ooo, and all the bands that played at Woodstick 2010. It was a treat to be able to watch Calvin Johnston twice around the corner from my house! LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip at the CIA and by the time this is seen then probably Belle And Sebastian at the Colston Hall!

What else did you enjoy this year:

This is difficult as 2010 has been such a good year in many ways I dont really know what to pick out, but here are a few:

Primavera festival having an amazing time with ace people, End of the Road for the same reasons plus watching Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley DJ’ing and witnessing Grace verge on exploding when he stood next to us in the big top! The successful opening of the new Spillers and also watching Gruff Rhys and Tony Da Gatorra do an instore without being able to speak the same language.
Modern Life is Rubbish starting out and working out!! I like to think we influenced Pulp’s decision to reform ;-))

2010 was… messy in a really really good way!

Tips and predictions for 2010:

My tip for 2011 is Pulp! It will be amazing. Me, Naomi and Grace are all going to watch them at Primavera and we’re really excited!

Les Savy Fav are playing in the Globe. I think it’s really exciting to have them playing in Cardiff.

Also, watch out for electro duo Tau Zero. They’re brilliant but yet do do any live shows.

The last ever Loves gig in London and finally more from Modern Life is Rubbish. We’re hoping to do some different nights if we can find the time!
