Put aside any thoughts you might have of mobile phone adverts. Vashti Bunyan still stands for rare moments of quiet folk beauty and she will spend the rest of her days proving this in various churches and great halls. This gig might be at the pricier end of the general scuzz we think is great on this site but as Paul Newman once said, why stay at home and have sex with a hamburger if you can go out and have steak? Or something.

Late Notes Folk
Vashti Bunyan plus The Cedar
Shimmering, pure voiced, other-worldy folk of elusive, indescribable beauty.

‘[Vashti Bunyan counts] Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom [as] superfans of her stunningly simple songs [and] ethereal voice. Her hushed, magical songs conjure up not so much “a world without end”, but one without time at all.’ THE GUARDIAN

The legend: singer/songwriter Vashti Bunyan recorded one of the most retrospectively-revered of all British folk albums, ‘Just Another Diamond Day’, in 1970, then disappeared from view for 30 years. Following its re-release on CD, Vashti was sought out by new folk-troubadours such as Devendra Bandhart, Joanna Newsom and Adem and belatedly recorded a follow-up, ‘Lookaftering’.

Since then, there’s been a film of her life; she appeared at Massive Attack’s Meltdown as part of the live soundtrack to ‘Blade Runner’; there are even rumours of a new album.

‘Other-worldy folk … distinct in its own beauty, shimmering with her soporific tones and floating on the gentle wonder of her melodies.’ BBC

And tonight she’s playing St George’s, supported by Bristol’s own fabulous cult attraction, The Cedar.

The Cedar: ‘Ambidextrous arrangements, great dynamic swoops, familial banter and a veritable Womad of instruments, the lasting impression is one of a quite wonderful and sumptuous performance.’
