Unusual places, unknown pleasures. Write this down: if you ever see the words ‘Rusty Trombone Of God’ on a poster or lost in gig listings you should be thankful. They are promoters that bring the obscure into the light, organising sporadic gigs that give you weird and dusty thrills from amazing pinpricks on the musical map. It feels fantastic that there are massive, permanent streams of weirdness out there, and that there are people bringing even a fraction of it within public earshot.
After last month’s towering freakoutfest, the teeny Pot Cafe will be your host. Two acts connected to the excellent Sheffield record label Singing Knives form the bulk of the bill: Vampire Blues will fill the Cafe’s airspace with dreamy guitar and harmonium, while the smartly-named Akke Phallus Cartography offer exploded clusters of God knows what, free music to expand the brain on. Get there early for H. Hawkline’s solo opening slot too, and find out why his crooked sunbeam folkwaves make us into gushing fanboys. This is going to be utterly brilliant.
