I am pretty excited for this one! A few years ago the second Ruby Suns album dropped in my lap like a swish postcard from, like, everywhere – ‘Sea Lion’ was balmy, fidgety and soaked in some sort of tropical wanderlust that meant it swung from blissed out indie lilting to field recorded chanting to sideways horn blasts to strange drum machine clatter and much else inbetween. All over the place with a quizzical grin on its face. Very lovely stuff in other words and the release of new material makes me itchy for the Buffalo. Also featuring Joy Collective ‘DJs’ who, if the hot weather continues, will wear sexy T-shirts JUST FOR YOU.

THE RUBY SUNS are a tropically-tinged psychedelic indiepop group from New Zealand, formed by Ryan McPhun (also of THE BRUNETTES).

Their self-titled debut album picked up attention from THE SHINS, who took them on a tour of Australia in 2007, and the band soon signed to SUB POP for critically-acclaimed second album ‘Sea Lion’.

Ryan McPhun has literally travelled around the world to arrive at third album ‘Fight Softly’, possessing a voracious musical mind, and this new album is the kind of head-spinning combination of big-picture vision and sumptuous detail that only comes from an artist with an urgent need to express all the stuff he’s seen – and you can dance to it!

“it glistens with pop immediacy, rollicks with breathtaking percussive interpositions, and clatters to a beat entirely of its own construct. Elements familiar to fans of F*** Buttons, Vampire Weekend, The Very Best and Animal Collective..” – Mike Diver, BBC
