THE JOY COLLECTIVE PRESENTS:

LOS CRIPIS

From Buenos Aires, and friends of Las Kellies (who we put on last year with Lesson No.1), Los Cripis are two ladies and one man making primitive, kaleidoscopic DIY guitar pop. Everything is wonky, distorted, sweet and full of colour, maybe recalling THE SHAGGS, BEAT HAPPENING, BIRD NAMES or SWELL MAPS. They have two albums as free downloads via the links below (‘desacargar’ means ‘download’, ‘donate’ means ‘donate’). They have a member called “The Beast”. This will be great!

BIG JOAN

Long-standing Bristol champs whose recent ‘Long, Slow Death Of…’ album is a total killer. They have a rhythm section that prowls, guitars that detonate at the right moment, and in singer Annette Berlin a kittenish, psychotic ranter. They are loud and sexy and brutal and fantastic.

PERSONAL BEST

No online presence for this two-piece but they are still one of my favourite new local bands. It’s Katie from Bedford Falls plus Lou from Caves plus lots of songs that sound indebted to bands like SUPERCHUNK, BEST COAST and THE MUFFS while being filled with their own supermelodic spirit.

Plus the return of DJ Casey Raymond. Last time he played some songs. Sort of.
