Ffffshhhheeeeeuuuuuwwwww. This is your brain on MOON DUO, the psychedelic Krautrock pairing of Ripley Johnson (guitarist from epic San Fran space-rock titans Wooden Shjips) and Sanae Yamada. Formed in 2009 and initially inspired by John Coltrane and Rashied Ali’s late 60s collaborations – exploratory spacey free jazz with titles like ‘Interstellar Space’ and ‘Cosmic Music’, so you can see where they’re coming from – Moon Duo quickly released 12″ ‘Love On The Sea’ and EP ‘Killing Time’ and now tour their debut full-length ‘Escape’ on Woodsist.
Rolling krautrock grooves, neanderthal riffs, spacey keyboard freakouts and half-buried, whispered vocals – think Silver Apples, Suicide, Neu!, Royal Trux. Less ‘usual suspects’, more a kitemark of doomy, heavy-lidded quality. This will be LOUD, and it will be ace.
Nicely esoteric support choice too, with a still reasonably rare live sighting of experimental electronic operator Tom Raybould’s ZWOLF. A restless collaborator on many a drone/improv outing at Chapter, under the Zwolf banner he brings crunchy laptop beats and fleet-footed electro goodness.

“If you could surf on sound, this song would be a pretty sweet wave to catch… propelled by skygazing guitars and a menacing, hovering organ like some UFO, real or imagined” – Tinymixtapes
