Okay, this preview is mostly down to my massive, steaming love of Fringes, and my love of Fringes is at least partially down to my massive, steaming love of pretty much any band that has a member who blows a fucking saxophone. There’s a review here, but basically: they are playful post rock brilliance, their horn gives me the horn, and you should see them whenever possible. Especially in a venue as huggable as the Cube. Yeah!

SLEEPING STATES + FRINGES + I KNOW I HAVE NO COLLAR

(Fri 11th / 8pm / £5)

Tonight the Cube is thrilled to welcome Sleeping States back to launch his new
Bella Union album ‘In The Gardens Of The North’.

Sleeping States has been an ongoing musical project for Markland Starkie,
since 2004. Originally inspired by the energy and DIY ethos of labels such as
K Records in the US and Slampt in the UK, Markland has released a slew of
records of various formats and lengths on numerous micro- and independent
labels, both in the UK and abroad over the past five years. These releases,
embracing the more lo-fi end of the recording spectrum, skip from genre to
genre, from introspective folk to synth pop to choral doo wop, though always
at the heart of his experimentation and exploration are confident melodies,
minimal arrangements and a strong sense of romance.

After relocating to Bristol from the capital last summer, Markland began to
draw on help from our own network of like-minded DIY-ers and ‘In the Gardens
of the North’ was born. Recorded with Rose Clark (Thanksgiving / Adrian
Orange) in her house in the woods outside Bristol. Expect languid, late-summer
loveliness.
