At the risk of turning into fulltime QU groupies: Oh-my-god-that-Whale-Watching-tour-gig-on-Saturday-was-amazing-and-this-will-be-amazing-too. Ahem. This time the greatness will flow from Danish loons. They have 318 members. They wear massive voluminous greay trousers onstage. They write epic swoonpop that’s bigger than their trousers. They are Efterklang, and you are going to this.

Efterklang

at Metropolis
(Tue 27th Apr 2010 / 8pm / £8 adv)
One of those special bands who blaze their own creative path and conjure up live shows that involve big joyful feelings. Efterklang are a expressive, expansive (7 to 12 members jumping all around the stage) and beautifully choreographed band in their prime. This majestic ensemble have performed with Britten Sinfonia at the Barbican and alongside peers such as Tortoise and Peter & Heather Broderick. Now with a more rocking, widescreen live sound and show, which is in keeping with the high pop perfection of their tantalising new album ‘Magic Chairs’ just out on 4AD.Efterklang’s third full-length album is the most ‘band-like’ to date and this is from ‘a band’ who tour a lot – like lots, change shapes, swoop instruments, hook up with orchestra’s, bring in special guests and make beguiling video art films. What we mean is… this band is ‘band-like’ they are a focused, highly creative team that delivers in style. This collection of songs is made to be heard loud and fulsome in a room full of people high on the bands energy and zest of life and playing their music worldwide. Magic Chairs is the closest they’ve got to a straightforward album of songs, with quirky rockers such as ‘Scandinavian Love’ and the cinematic ‘Modern Drift’ adding to the groups outstanding set of song to sweep the listener away from this world and into Efterklang’s technicolour version.

“A superb record from one of the world’s most uniquely-minded bands.” BBC

“This distilled Efterklang is premium strength stuff.” CLASH

“45 minutes of heartfelt and lovelorn pop.” KRUGER

“A miraculous conservatoire pop opus.” MOJO

Slaraffenland

Melodic, cinematic, rock from a band who sing and play like brothers in really well constructed and arranged
unison. transfixing drums, lots of inventive percussion, mixed with electronics, finger picked and distorting guitars, hordes of brass instruments and lots of vocals by all 5 members of the band. Their compositions are more like classical arrangements than populist ditties, but that does mean their toe tapping or ballads wont move you .
