Okay, this gig is way too classy for you scumbags who usually read this site but, you know, pretend otherwise. While you may think Marcia’s official website goes sliiiightly over the top in praise of its subject, there is no doubt that whether you call her Queen or Empress, Ms Griffiths is a pretty big deal amongst Jamaica’s musical exports. Seek out the records she released with Bob Andy (as Bob & Marcia): ‘Pied Piper’, ‘The Onion Song’, ‘Young, Gifted And Black’; a great seam of reggae that mixed breezy pop flourishes with sweetly entwined vocal harmonies. After they split, Marcia carried on the honey-voiced flame, making (and still continuing) a string of classy albums in thrall to coating every song in glory (her version of ‘When Will I See You Again’ is a treat). I’d imagine she’s till got the pipes too. Ladies and gentlemen: the real stuff.
