NEXT JOY GIG. Please support smallscale local promoters and bands you haven’t necessarily heard of – we’ve been to a lot of under-attended gigs recently and it’s a bit of a soul-sapper, particularly when it comes to bands as brilliant and life affirming as… Kellies. They deserve a floor full of fruggers, so fresh and effortlessly cool is their take on the skeletal dynamics of post-punk aces like Delta 5, Liliput, ESG and The Slits. Listen here and you’ll want to be in their gang. Support is the ghostly rock moves of James James and the welcome return of fiery ladies Bellies, plus DJ Casey Raymond, the between-band equivalent of a diamond willy in your ear. See below for full details, and yes you are allowed to punch us on the way in. But just be there.
LESSON NO.1 & THE JOY COLLECTIVE PRESENT
From Buenos Aires, Kellies are three multi-lingual ladies who play a righteous mix of catchy garage rock, pared-down post punk and clattering fun noises. Sometimes known as Las Kellies, their latest (self-titled) album continues the band’s work of recalling THE SLITS, ESG, DEVO, RAINCOATS and generally being great. You can hear a lot of stuff here:
New venture for Simon and Rich, the rhythm section from Cardiff’s excellent KING ALEXANDER. JJ make hypnotic, spacious rock moves that layer up guitar, drums and sampled hums that NO AGE, TRANS AM and other weirdos would be proud of. They’ll join the internet one day too.
Return gig for Bristol’s Bellies after last year’s Undertone triumph. Nat and Debi are current or former members of THE JELAS and DRUNK GRANNY, which should give you a rough idea what to expect: awesome, free hollering that fans of LILIPUT, WET DOG and ERASE ERRATA will dig.
