EDIT:  Trampling all over Vivers’ righteous prose to advise that, due to a family bereavement, sadly Geoff Farina has had to leave the tour a few dates early to fly home to the U.S.  Chris Brokaw continues though, and will be headlining the show with songs from their joint album and doubtless his own back catalogue.  Ratatosk will still be bringing unmissable support, and stepping up at very short notice is Chris Eynon a.k.a. THE SPINES, whose last Cardiff show (brought to you by your very own Joy Collective) you can read about here.

The good thing about promoters that are also journalists is that their descriptive blurb is of a higher standard than the usual, and I feel less bad about being a copy and paste addict. As you’ll see below, this gig is slightly more quiet than the usual Lesson decibel onslaught, but the quality levels are still present: two icons of the US underground getting dragged in front of your eyes doesn’t just happen every day. And I’ll be bringing my crossbow in case anyone talks through Ratatosk, who plays fantastically mournful beauties, and who you should definitely turn up early for.

SAT 27 MARCH

LESSON NO.1 AND LOOSE PRESENT:

CHRIS BROKAW
Making his Welsh debut (unless anyone wants to correct me), Brokaw has been in some great and powerful guitar rock bands – CODEINE, COME, THE NEW YEAR, Thurston Moore’s band and, as a guest, with another ton. His guitar style can alternately be downhome folky and blisteringly electric. I imagine he will play some songs from ‘The Angel’s Message To Me’, his new collaboration with Farina, even though the latter isn’t here now. http://www.myspace.com/thechrisbrokawrockband

RATATOSK
Ambient/electronica/folk/avant/etc/etc project of Rhodri Viney, who you may know from the bands RIGHT HAND LEFT HAND and VITO among others. This finds him employing lots of pedals and a musical saw, or has done whenever I’ve seen it at least, and is likely to make you swoon like a fop if you like MATT ELLIOTT, YANN TIERSEN, BRIAN ENO, ELUVIUM and some other wonky ambienty stuff of that nature. http://www.myspace.com/ratatoskisnow

THE SPINES
As mentioned above, this is the solo one man/guitar/FX unit project of Chris Eynon, who is a Cardiffian with a past in droney, hypnotically blank musicial entities like KNOW POINT and HOTEL X. “Gel with sand in it… Nicely picked out notes, gentle interference, in love.” That’s a review from when he played for The Joy Collective earlier this year. He has helped us out massively at short notice so be a sport and come see him. He doesn’t have a Myspace or anything like that. Neither did The Shaggs. (They do now, though. I just checked.)

ALL HAPPENING AT: Buffalo, Windsor Place, Cardiff
7.30-10.30pm (seriously dudes, early start), £5 on the door
