Not to be missed, this one; as I type there are purportedly very few tickets remaining for Buffalo’s second excellent gig of the night and, alongside the recent Mount Kimbie show at CAI and Friday’s set from Cooly G, further pleasing evidence that far-reaching, experimental electronica at the outer limits of dubstep can be attracted to Cardiff. 22-year-old London electronic polymath JAMES BLAKE‘s first four releases have maintained a remarkably high level of quality across an equally impressive stylistic range; from the gorgeous pitch-bent Aaliyah loops and low-end crackle of the peerless CMYK EP, through Sparing The Horses‘ watery click and snap, underpinned by throbbing, speaker-quaking bass runs, to his recent Klavierwerke EP, wherein Blake’s own startlingly soulful vocals stretch around glacial, slo-mo pulsing and delicate piano motifs.

Pretty great groundwork for his 2011 debut LP then, especially following the teaser of his Feist cover Limit To Your Love which (NB: obvious comparison ahead) sounds like nothing so much as a straight-faced Jamie Lidell backed by top-form Portishead. With such a proclivity to mix it up, anticipation of what to expect from him live should rightly be huge. It’ll be a late night, but a packed line-up ahead of Blake makes this not only essential but VFM too.

Here’s our second bigger show in Buffalo Bar this winter. ‘Deliciously weird’ producer James Blake’s tracks definitely stand out from the crowd. Tracks like CMYK which draws on both Kelis’ “Caught Out There” and Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody” but reworked beyond recognition, his remixes of Mount Kimbie and Untold and some truly mental productions bring his unique style to the forefront of the Experimental sound we are pushing. Do not sleep on this.
