Hey Caroline Duffy! A chance (well, news that the ace Jelas will be playing an album launch gig there two days before they play our gig in Cardiff) glance at the Cafe Kino website revealed many gems recently, not least this super-rare showing for Bristol enigmas Headfall. No offence to the other bands on this bill, and the totally laudable aim of getting local tweestars The Middle Ones in to curate a year’s worth of monthly gigs, but Headfall are exactly the type of band we like on this site (Speak for yourself – Jarrett): intimately connected to great Bristol DIY hub Local Kid, sharing members with bug-eyed godheads Corey Orbison, Fringes, Arctic Circle and more, and playing the wooziest waves of drifting noise imaginable, like sleepwalking psychos, or a bath in heaven (not the nightclub). This could almost be as good as Cafe Kino’s food selection. Which is almost as good as Headfall.

SUN 30 JAN 11

A Year With… The Middle Ones

+ Headfall

+ Pete & James

7pm – 10.30pm

£4

Each year we will be choosing a band to spend a year with… This year, THE MIDDLE ONES will be our resident band, and will curate a night every month – hand-picking a selection of their favourite artists to join them on stage.

Anna Knowles (guitar, vocals) and Grace Denton (accordion, percussion, vocals) both hail from the north, but formed THE MIDDLE ONES whilst at university in Norwich. Over the last couple of years they have won fans from around the world with their delicate and understated music and modest charm. Vocal harmonies weave tender, honest songs that betray a knowing melancholie, as well as a care-free, starry-eyed joy for life – a joy for simply singing, for stamping feet, for shouting out loud.

A 10” ep, Things Grow There, was released on Where It’s At Is Where You Are last year, and since then the band have been busy sharing the stage with the likes of Jeffrey Lewis and Calvin Johnson, and touring with Rose Melberg, as well as recording their debut album in Bristol for Stitch-Stitch records.

We will be spending a year with The Middle Ones on the last Sunday of every month of 2011, and that is not nearly enough!

Joining The Middle Ones for the first show of the year will be Bristol’s DIY stalwarts HEADFALL, who have been recording a new album of lo-fi noise and shimmer, and PETE & JAMES, playing live for the first time. It will be a unique evening of one-off collaborations and unpretentious beauty.
