Updates in the world of Gruff Rhys: as well as two Cardiff dates to celebrate his madheaded collaboration with Brazillian TV repairman and musical instrument inventor Tony Da Gatorra (the album is thumping, quixotic and brilliant, the gigs sold out), the film of the South American adventures that inadvertantly led to the album is almost upon us. Separado! tracks Rhys tracking distant relatives, is no doubt full of hazy freakery, and gets its own introduction and Q&A session from the man himself at Chapter Arts Centre. As you can see below, the film’s on for a couple of weeks, but book ahead to avoid the disappointment of missing an audience with universally-loved tall and hairy Super Furry man.

Separado! – Gruff Rhys Q & A on 6pm Wednesday4th

Gruff will be introducing the film and will also conduct a post-show question and answer with the audience alongside co-director, Dylan Goch.

UK/Argentina/Brazil/2009/84mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Gruff Rhys, Dyl ‘Goch’ Jones.

Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys goes on a quest to find his distant relatives among the descendants of a wave of Welsh immigrants to Patagonia in the late 1800s. Following a rigged horseback race that ended in a fatal accident in late 1882, Dafydd Jones fled to South America and became part of the still thriving Welsh-speaking community. Travelling at times by a teleportation device, much like a Power Ranger’s helmet, between Wales and Patagonia, Rhys journeys across South America performing experimental solo concerts, tracing the Welsh community’s movements, and searching for Jones’ great grandson, a 1970s Argentine pop star called René Griffiths, who would arrive on stage on a horse and sing in Welsh. Told with magical realism, this is a playful, sweet and thoroughly sincere road movie that looks at a fascinating part of welsh culture.
