No apologies for going a little off-piste with this one; for an hour\u2019s drive up the A470 and a highly modest \u00a36 outlay, you can spend this Saturday venue-hopping between six small rooms on one mid-Wales high street seeing many of Cardiff\u2019s best and brightest and buoyed by the knowledge you\u2019ve done your bit for a worthy cause into the bargain.<\/p>\n

Standout names appearing at this mini-S\u0175n include the barnstorming full-band folk-rock of Richard James<\/strong>, the hyper-literate baroque pop of Spencer McGarry Season<\/strong>, Threatmantics<\/strong>\u2019 rollocking, fiddle-lashed folk racket and Ratatosk<\/strong>\u2019s bewitching recasting of historical woes to a backdrop of intricate loops and apocalyptic drones.\u00a0 Want more noise?\u00a0 There\u2019s the paint-peeling guitars, tetchy drinker\u2019s-eye narrative and unwell cornet of Gindrinker<\/strong>, or a furious post-hardcore one-two from Goodtime Boys<\/strong> and A Thousand Arrows<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0Folky goodness comes in many forms, too; try Ceri Frost<\/strong>, Evening Chorus<\/strong>, No Thee No Ess<\/strong> and The Gentle Good<\/strong> for starters.\u00a0 Huw M<\/strong>, Zwolf<\/strong> and Little Eris<\/strong> rep for eclectic beatmaking.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s comedy from equally hilarious and terrifying force of nature Nick Helm<\/strong>, whose last Cardiff appearance in the yurt at Milgi was one of the highlights of my summer.\u00a0 James Acaster, David Trent, Oxjam co-ordinator Henry Widdicombe<\/strong> and Benjamin Partridge<\/strong> will also be funny.\u00a0 Throw in Cardiff\u2019s premier loosely themed, cake-awarding monthly multimedia quiz night Quiz Quest<\/strong> and you\u2019ve enough proper value for money to justify a two-day bill and a double-digit entry fee, at the very least.<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s event raised over \u00a35,000 apparently, a pretty fantastic effort.\u00a0 Make some effort yourself, cadge a lift, volunteer or just turn up and enjoy.\u00a0 If nothing else, it\u2019ll make those difficult clashes at S\u0175n a little easier to solve.<\/p>\n
