Let\u2019s not be under any illusions here: it would be pretty perverse to start any vaguely representative round-up of live music in South Wales this month anywhere else than S\u0175n<\/strong>.\u00a0 The fourth annual new music whirlwind hits eleven Cardiff venues from October 21st<\/sup>-23rd<\/sup>, with a bewildering 140-plus line up of bands and DJs, numerous sideline events, a broader than ever stylistic range and, this year, a few subtle tweaks to the wristband arrangements.\u00a0 A full preview will appear on JC shortly; suffice to say, if you enjoy festivals, discovering new music or value for money, you\u2019d have to be a right curmudgeonly bulb to pass it up.<\/p>\n

So what of the rest of October?\u00a0 Fancy a nice couple of weeks of silent contemplation and zenlike training of your liver?\u00a0 Tough, because there\u2019s great stuff everywhere this month.\u00a0 Buckle up.\u00a0 First up, ATTENTION WALES AND THE SOUTH WEST.\u00a0 DOOM<\/strong> IS COMING.\u00a0 This will most likely never happen again; the utterly unique rapper and beatmaker, self-styled supervillain, man of near-infinite pseudonyms and a stream of stone-cold classic hip hop LPs dating back well over a decade, is notorious for hardly ever announcing live shows.\u00a0 When he does, they\u2019re equally notorious for no-shows or sloppy performance and even rumour of doppelgangers appearing in his stead.\u00a0 Whatever, this is totally unmissable.\u00a0 Billed as Doomsday, with (allegedly) material from MF Doom, Victor Vaughan, Madvillain and King Geedorah releases and \u2013 get this \u2013 support from a nine-piece band reinterpreting DJ Shadow\u2019s Endtroducing<\/em>\u2026 come on.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 Bristol Academy, Saturday 16th<\/sup> October.<\/p>\n

More Bristolian treats for hyperbole fans this month, as the ever-wonderful Qu Junktions host Josephine Foster<\/strong> performing Lorca\u2019s Spanish folk songs\/poetry accompanied by the Victor Herrero Band<\/strong> (Cube, 2nd<\/sup>), and Afrobeat and highlife legend and Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen<\/strong> (Metropolis, 9th<\/sup>).\u00a0 They also bring Bristol\u2019s lucky punters, and Cardiffians with energy and purpose, two ridiculously great-looking one-off shows.\u00a0\u00a0 Two stellar, intense avant-noise duos visit the Cube on the 13th<\/sup>, with Evangelista\u2019s Carla Bozulich<\/strong> and Zu\u2019s Massimo Pupillo<\/strong> teaming up to strip the walls alongside the pedal steel\/drum fury of Jailbreak<\/strong>, i.e. Chris Corsano and Scorces\u2019 Heather Leigh.\u00a0 Seriously, get there.\u00a0 For something very different, head to Qu\u2019s show at the Arnolfini (21st<\/sup>) where ingenious and playful French composer\/inventor Pierre Bastien<\/strong> and Polish toy instrument outfit Ma\u0142e Instrumenty<\/strong> delight with bewitching Bagpuss curiosities.\u00a0 These people just live to raise the bar.\u00a0 Honourable mentions to the Croft too, where genuinely remarkable performance artist\/songwriter Baby Dee<\/strong> teams up with gnarled jazz-funkers Black Carrot<\/strong> (22nd<\/sup>) and avant-prog vets the Ex<\/strong> swing by after S\u0175n (23rd<\/sup>).<\/p>\n

Bristol doesn\u2019t have a monopoly on memorable nights out, of course.\u00a0 Hats off to the good folk at Sound Space Studios<\/strong>, who recreate the madness of the Flaming Lips<\/strong>\u2019 \u2018Boom Box Experiments\u2019 for a small audience on the 8th<\/sup>.\u00a0 The Flips\u2019 whacked-out Warners-baiting concept album Zaireeka will be played as intended, simultaneously on four studio systems.\u00a0 Sure, you could try it in your kitchen, but these are professionals.\u00a0 Fans of accessible experimental music played at mind-flaying volume should also sign up early for the Cardiff debut of HEALTH<\/strong> (Clwb, 13th<\/sup>), soon-huge local heroes Islet<\/strong> (Louisiana, 3rd<\/sup>), whiplash noisecore evergreens Melt Banana<\/strong> (Thekla, 14th<\/sup>), Italian stoner titans Ufomammut<\/strong> (Croft, 12th<\/sup>, with immense local duo Big Naturals<\/strong>), and the cracking triple-bill of No Age<\/strong> (career-high album just out), London-based Sub Poppers Male Bonding<\/strong> and lo-fi oddity Blank Dogs<\/strong> (5th<\/sup>, moved to Start The Bus in Bristol).\u00a0 In noting the latter, let\u2019s briefly pause to pour a generic gassy lager out in memory of Cardiff Barfly; many have grown old and tired of it, others may have played gigs there for peanuts, but it provided plenty over the years too.\u00a0 Let\u2019s hope better comes of it, Cardiff can scarcely afford to lose a venue of that size.<\/p>\n

Anyway.\u00a0 There\u2019s still venues and promoters reinvigorating themselves in these times, with the new UWIC term bringing a clutch of excellent local bands to Howard Gardens on the cheap.\u00a0 Long-suffering readers of our review pages will note that Threatmantics<\/strong> (13th<\/sup>), Ceri Frost<\/strong> (18th<\/sup>), Joy Of Sex<\/strong> (20th<\/sup>) and Gindrinker<\/strong> (27th<\/sup>) all come recommended; pick one or more and give some support.\u00a0 Liz from Loose gives 10 Feet Tall a bit of overdue CPR with a welcome appearance from electronica\/post-rock\/shoegaze vet Adam Pierce, aka Mice Parade<\/strong>; sterling support comes from H. Hawkline<\/strong> among others, and your Joy Collective chimps will play records.\u00a0 Warm, trumpet-toting Icelandic popster Benni Hemm Hemm<\/strong> returns (also 10ft, 25th<\/sup>), though I won\u2019t be tempting fate by asserting his full band will appear this time.\u00a0 Loose also have a tasty Hallowe\u2019en alldayer (Buffalo, 31st<\/sup>) with a rejigged Bearsuit<\/strong>, Screaming Females<\/strong> and Threatmantics<\/strong> among others.\u00a0 And in a month where stamina is key for the hardy gig-goer, there\u2019s an excellent two-floor Oxjam affair in Clwb (3rd<\/sup>) with hefty stoner might from Taint<\/strong>, Zonderhoof<\/strong> and The Death Of Her Money<\/strong> (also at Le Pub, 6th<\/sup>) amongst others.<\/p>\n

If Mice Parade are your cup of stuff, and they should be, then why not check out some recommendations from this month\u2019s Pointlessly Ghettoised Electronica Paragraph?\u00a0 Mount Kimbie<\/strong>\u2019s otherworldly, inward-looking dubstep, shot through with a downtempo jazziness while sounding fresh and vital, is a top bit of booking for the Arts Institute (27th<\/sup>); Bristolians can see them at the Arnolfini (30th<\/sup>) amid a predictably eclectic Qu Junktions bill featuring Xiu Xiu<\/strong> and Munch Munch<\/strong>.\u00a0 Martyn<\/strong> (Buffalo, 28th<\/sup>) works from a no less varied palette than Mount Kimbie but, Dutch-born and with a background in D n\u2019 B and techno, comes with an altogether tougher approach to dubstep.\u00a0 Both recommended, as is Planet Mu wunderkind Raffertie<\/strong> (Clwb, 14th<\/sup>), whose queasy, Zomby-esque basslines and curdled synths will also bang heads at S\u0175n.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Warp\u2019s PVT<\/strong> (formerly Pivot; Start The Bus, 2nd<\/sup>) do a far better job at forward-looking, live-band electro pop than Cut Copyists Fenech-Soler<\/strong> (Thekla\/Clwb, 25th<\/sup>\/26th<\/sup>), but if you\u2019re flush both are worth seeing.\u00a0 As, no question, is The Juan MacLean<\/strong>, DFA doyen and compiler of a thumpingly excellent recent DJ Kicks set, who\u2019s at Start The Bus on the 29th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Excellent techno-tinged post-rockers Errors<\/strong> are back, too, at the Fleece (10th<\/sup>, with the Twilight Sad<\/strong>), and if you like your Dilla-fresh beats interwoven with summery lo-fi pop and muted disco there’s a S\u0175n launch do with Toro y Moi <\/strong>which should be right up your alley (CAI, 18th)<\/sup>.\u00a0 Finally, it would be remiss to not mention the fact that bonkers techno genius Green Velvet<\/strong> and Andrew Weatherall<\/strong> appear at a Bristol alldayer (Motion Skate Park, 15th<\/sup>) this month.\u00a0 So I have.<\/p>\n

Just time for a round-up of the best of the rest.\u00a0 Evergreen Bristolian beat poet Gerard Langley and his latest incarnation of the Blue Aeroplanes<\/strong> play a hometown show (Fleece, 2nd<\/sup>); Fucked Up<\/strong> return once more, in support of Gainesville agit-punks Against Me!<\/strong> (Solus, 24th<\/sup>); Beta Band\/King Biscuit Time man Steve Mason<\/strong> has a post-Green Man solo show (Globe, 14th<\/sup>); British Sea Power<\/strong> do epic and windswept indie pitched just right (Globe, 24th<\/sup>); there\u2019s lovely languid slo-mo torch song spookery from Warpaint <\/strong>(Cooler, 27th<\/sup>); anti-folk Sonny and Cher fun with Stanley Brinks and Freschard<\/strong> (Buffalo, 5th<\/sup>), wonderfully chipper Dexys pop from Frankie and the Heartstrings<\/strong> (Clwb, 4th<\/sup>), nasty, brutish and short Leeds grebos Chickenhawk <\/strong>(Clwb, 5th<\/sup>) and a septeguenarian man playing Reggae records (DJ Derek<\/strong>, Buffalo, 7th<\/sup>).\u00a0 Which seems as good a place as any to finally stop.\u00a0\u00a0 Thankfully.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
