\"\"<\/a>This is my first gig in Bristol and I though I\u2019d play safe and trust in my fellow Welsh man Huw Stephens and his stamp of quality. And on come Pulled Apart by Horses, with thumping riffs and a very healthy punk attitude. A mosh pit breaks out within 30 seconds. By the second song, \u2018shouter\u2019 Tom Hudson is in the crowd with his microphone stand where he\u2019s joined by his brother shouting back to make an awesomely raucous duet. Their show remains 3D throughout, with the stage only a starting point. Special mention goes to the audience member who manages to hang from the ceiling like Spider-Man, singing along the whole time. Each song is fast and furious full of storming guitar parts, but also some surprisingly melodic touches wrapped up in all that energy.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And then up bounded Sky Larkin; \u2018a great band, a great band\u2026\u2019 as one audience member proclaims sagely before their arrival. Cute as buttons, they bounce up, all pigtails, shining red shoes and a drummer who pulls the most entertaining faces. Despite this sweetness, Sky Larkin have enough musical muscle not be overwhelmed by Pulled Apart. The punk\u2019s still there, but it\u2019s been rolled and coated in sugary melody, akin to some of the Yeah Yeah Yeah\u2019s more tender moments. The lyrics are lost slightly, but singer Katie still carries a kitten-like emotion in her voice that captivates. Come their last song, drummer Nestor pulls one last face before collapsing on the floor. It\u2019s the crowd\u2019s job to cheer him back on his stool for one more because, like me, they don\u2019t want it to end.<\/p>\n

Seeing either one of these bands would be a treat on its own, but Huw has got two gems from Leeds here, and we should be thankful that he\u2019s kind enough to take them around the UK for us all to enjoy.<\/p>\n
