

{"id":2813,"date":"2009-09-01T22:17:12","date_gmt":"2009-09-01T22:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thejoycollective.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2813"},"modified":"2009-09-01T22:17:51","modified_gmt":"2009-09-01T22:17:51","slug":"nektar-right-hand-left-hand-strange-news-from-another-star-barfly-cardiff-01-09-09-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jonnyjaniero.com\/thejoycollective\/review\/nektar-right-hand-left-hand-strange-news-from-another-star-barfly-cardiff-01-09-09-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Nektar \/ Right Hand Left Hand \/ Strange News From Another Star @ Barfly, Cardiff : 01.09.09"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2814\" title=\"RHLH\" src=\"http:\/\/jonnyjaniero.wpengine.com\/thejoycollectivewp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/RHLH.jpg\" alt=\"RHLH\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" \/><strong>Strange News From Another Star<\/strong> take to the stage with Jimmy sporting a military denim look. \u00a0On closer inspection it would appear that he&#8217;s taped the insignias on himself. \u00a0They fall off toward the end of the gig. \u00a0Mark Foley&#8217;s bass podium is making a mockery of Barfly&#8217;s heightened ceiling and is coping by playing the bass in sweeping movements. \u00a0Does this sound prog?<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, their shouty garage rock seems to be drawing ageing rock fans closer to the stage. \u00a0Like continental drift. \u00a0But Slower. \u00a0Jimmy&#8217;s between song banter is lost on most of the crowd, as is the fact that he can&#8217;t see his own guitar through most of the set. \u00a0About half the audience actually get it though, which should be a triumph for a garage punk rock band, half the age of the crowd, who warm up for the gig by doing press ups stage left. \u00a0Although it could be seen as a failure to nail the other half seeing as they&#8217;re dressed head to toe in denim and have a man playing bass with a handlebar moustache and a headband. \u00a0You decide.<\/p>\n<p>Last time I saw <strong>Right Hand Left Hand<\/strong> I got really drunk, misread their set list, misheard something said by a mate and littered my review with inaccuracies and outright lies which was later corrected by a band member with the aid of Wikipedia links. \u00a0I&#8217;ve learnt my lesson and won&#8217;t be making this mistake again. \u00a0Tonight I&#8217;m sticking to facts so I made sure that Bob (pictured) and Ernie gave me their set list after the gig. \u00a0They played:<\/p>\n<p>Bugatti<\/p>\n<p>Coincident XY<\/p>\n<p>Nub City<\/p>\n<p>Stanislav Petrov<\/p>\n<p>The Capgras&#8217; Delusion<\/p>\n<p>The Teignmouth Electron<\/p>\n<p>They were very good and the crowd liked them. \u00a0Prog fans love guitars, great drumming and effects pedals. \u00a0Who knew? \u00a0One of the crowd was overheard saying &#8216;these guys are interesting&#8217;, what more do you want? \u00a0Bob was even mildly mobbed after their set.<\/p>\n<p>I had a cassette called Pure Soft Metal in about 1987. \u00a0I now know why. \u00a0It was to prepare me for this moment. \u00a0<strong>Nektar<\/strong>. \u00a0Anglo-German prog legends. \u00a0Except none of them are wearing a cape. \u00a0This is very disappointing. \u00a0I get excited when a purple velvet piece of material appears, alas it&#8217;s only a curtain for the bank of keyboards. \u00a0Gadzooks(1), a bank of keyboards. \u00a0The singer plays a guitar bigger than his regrets(2) and has glued his tinted glasses halfway down his nose(3). \u00a0He rocks. \u00a0He also looks like Italian architecture guru <a href=\"http:\/\/img.metro.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2008\/08\/DaMosto140808_450x350.jpg\">Francesco Da Mosto<\/a>. \u00a0Basically it sounds a bit like Kula Shaker(4) but the oldies love it. \u00a0Apart from a woman sat at the back who may&#8217;ve married into prog(5). \u00a0As it turns out, the keyboard solos save this band, I keep trying to leave but seem to get sucked in. \u00a0One is happenstance(6), twice is coincidence, thrice is the power of prog. \u00a0I do finally pull myself away 35 minutes into their 90 minute long set. \u00a0They may still be playing as I type this. \u00a0I&#8217;ll leave a well known local celebrity to have the last word:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;None of this makes any sense&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Andrew Falkous<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a01-0 Jarrett. \u00a02. \u00a0Thanks Falc. \u00a03.
