

{"id":2805,"date":"2009-08-31T22:09:42","date_gmt":"2009-08-31T22:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thejoycollective.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2805"},"modified":"2009-08-31T22:11:07","modified_gmt":"2009-08-31T22:11:07","slug":"gwdihw-micro-festival-gwdihw-cardiff-300809","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jonnyjaniero.com\/thejoycollective\/review\/gwdihw-micro-festival-gwdihw-cardiff-300809\/","title":{"rendered":"Gwdihw MicroFestival @ Gwdihw, Cardiff : 30\/08\/09"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2807\" title=\"Islet\" src=\"http:\/\/jonnyjaniero.wpengine.com\/thejoycollectivewp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/Islet1.jpg\" alt=\"Islet\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" \/>3.30pm.\u00a0 Wheat beer.\u00a0 Bad idea.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bec and Beth<\/strong> (and it would appear Sophie) take to the stage at 4 o&#8217;clock.\u00a0 No instruments, just the 3 of them singing.\u00a0 In French.\u00a0 I think.\u00a0 Maybe the wheat beer is already having an effect.\u00a0 A cello, acoustic guitar, small Irish drum thing and some oversized rattley coffee beans all make an appearance.\u00a0 There&#8217;s folk, sea shanties and a Merle Haggard cover.\u00a0 Nice way to start a Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Can of Grolsch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fredrick Stanley Star<\/strong> are fast becoming everyone&#8217;s favourite Cardiff band.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not hard to see why.\u00a0 Their shuffling melodies are rather hypnotic, like early Beta Band or those weird clips of the weather in Newport&#8217;s new Lloyds Bar (admittedly that&#8217;s quite specific &#8211; check them out).\u00a0 Aptly there are Super Furry Animals and Zygotic Mycis belonging to Gorky in attendance and it&#8217;s from a similar rock that FSS are hewn.\u00a0 This sort of music has a habit of coming from Wales (and occasionally Scotland), it&#8217;s hard to imagine anyone in and English inner city producing this kind of magical music.\u00a0 They&#8217;re getting better all the time too.\u00a0 Keep an eye on this rather lovely bunch of crazies, hopefully they&#8217;ll get the success they deserve.<\/p>\n<p>Pint of Peroni.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alun Tan Lan<\/strong> plays nice folky acoustic stuff.\u00a0 Sometimes in English, mostly in Welsh.\u00a0 He basically suffered from following Fredrick Stanley Star.\u00a0 He probably wishes he went on before them.<\/p>\n<p>Bottle of Corona.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Euro Childs<\/strong> is brilliant.\u00a0 He&#8217;d&#8217;ve still been brilliant if he hadn&#8217;t played any songs such was the comic genius of his between song banter,\u00a0 New solo stuff and old Gorkys stuff sat nicely together, both being whacked out on a keyboard with rudimentary backing beats.\u00a0 The new album is out now and is quite probably his 112th.\u00a0 Most of you reading this will know all about him, if you don&#8217;t, go buy Barafundle and randomly pick a solo album at the same time.\u00a0 You can then back track through his catalogue buying an album a month for the next 7 years of your life.<\/p>\n<p>Can of Strongbow.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of folky weirdness and then <strong>Zwolf<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is a bit of a shock.\u00a0 Man, laptop, sythy boxes of musical magic.\u00a0 It looks like he&#8217;s fighting to make them work properly too which kind of adds to the live experience.\u00a0 It&#8217;s bleepy, glitchy type stuff that I have no reference points for.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t usually consider this to be my kind of music but I really like it.\u00a0 My brother liked the women wrestling in foam being projected onto the screen behind.\u00a0 Everyone&#8217;s a winner.<\/p>\n<p>Wheat beer again.\u00a0 Forgot it wasn&#8217;t very nice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Islet<\/strong> (pictured) are fantastic.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the second time I&#8217;ve seen them, this time they have an Alex Stanley Star in the band which makes for slightly less instrument swapping.\u00a0 They still have three vocalists and, at times, two drummers though.\u00a0 The odd light is casting quality shadows onto the backdrop which makes their set seem all the more psychedelic.\u00a0 Or maybe I&#8217;m quite drunk.\u00a0 Either way they&#8217;re increasingly sounding like their records should be in Carl Rylatt&#8217;s DJing stash.<\/p>\n<p>Back to Strongbow.<\/p>\n<p>To end proceedings there&#8217;s a band who&#8217;s name I didn&#8217;t catch.\u00a0 They had Alun Tan Lan in them and probably thought they should be in Rylatt&#8217;s record collection.\u00a0 Their attempts at instrumental psyche rock left me a bit cold though.<\/p>\n<p>Bottle of Bulmers.<\/p>\n<p>Pint of Peroni.<\/p>\n<p>Miss Millies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>3.30pm.\u00a0 Wheat beer.\u00a0 Bad idea.
