\u00a0Jazz and metal would seem to be a combination that a lot of decent, sensible people would shy away from, but in the same way as carrots go with pesto (and they bloody do), the music of Norwegians Shining packs several pounds of definite rightness. You want more reasons to politely back out? There’s likely to be several dollops of prog and modern classical involved too, and rightly so: Shining are experimental in the utterly correct way, not being content to settle on the energetic, acoustic jazz they began with, but rolling in influences from skronkpunks Motorpsycho, avant composer Olivier Messiaen and black metal tourmates Enslaved (whom they collaborated with on an Armageddon-themed concerto – alright!). And lest you think this is worryingly cerebral or pretentious, a quick listen to something like ‘Aleister Explains Everything’ will sort you out: itchy, frantic, honking rock to peel your scalp back.<\/p>\n

Shining are a Norwegian band that started out as an experimental jazz group in 1998, and has since evolved into playing their own avant-garde brand of progressive metal. Winner of the Alarm Award in both 2006 (for In the Kingdom of Kitsch You Will Be a Monster) and 2007 (for Grindstone).<\/p>\n

Shining\u2019s fifth album Blackjazz was released 18 January 2010 on Indie Recordings. The album\u2019s title is meant to describe Shining\u2019s sound, which on Blackjazz became even harder and more intense than ever before. New Shining sounds like Experimental Metal with huge Jazz influence.<\/p>\n
