It’s pretty obvious that records are better than people. When was the last time you saw a record let their dog crap outside your front door, or forget to buy bog paper eighteen weeks in a row? So a whole building full of recorded music is a pretty fine thing, and certainly worthy of a whole day in the spotlight. Record Store Day<\/strong>is a global and fair heartwarming endeavour, packing local, independent shops with grinning punters, exclusive releases and performances from bands unafraid of sending Warpaint CDs flying. These two are recommended and you can do both on the same day: the stout men of Diverse<\/strong> not only promise “nibbles and refreshments” but will give you classy folk rock from Redlands Palomino Company<\/strong> and Paper Aeroplanes<\/strong>, as well as\u00a0the frankly terrifying proposition that is Rhys Eggsy<\/strong> GLC acoustic set.\u00a0Spillers <\/strong>fill their equally small space with customer DJ sets, a turn from decent and gently avant troubadour Meilir<\/strong>, plus the awesomely awesome surf rock of Y Niwl<\/strong>, jetting down from a\u00a0Bangor appearance\u00a0a la Phil Collins at Live Aid. Bet their jumpers will be box fresh\u00a0though, superstars that they now are.\u00a0A Future Of The Left <\/strong>set at Clwb later that evening should please the overspill too. Much to celebrate, all at your fingertips, for as long as you want it.<\/p>\n

DIVERSE<\/p>\n

Saturday 16th April is International Record Store Day. Indie shops across the world will be celebrating by selling limited edition releases by numerous artists on numerous labels. We’re no different. In addition to the stuff we’ll be selling, we have some wonderful entertainment in store.<\/p>\n

Paper Aeroplanes <\/strong>will be playing live for us, if you’ve not heard them then come to the shop and stick your head into our listening post headphones. Last album, ‘The Day We Ran Into The Sea’ was a shop favourite and newie ‘We Are Ghosts’ will hopefully propel them into the big league. Think Laura Marling, think Joni Mitchell, think ‘I’ll go and see them on April 19th’.<\/p>\n

We also have The Redlands Palomino Company<\/strong> playing an acoustic set. We’ve sold billions* of their first two albums here and number three is on the way. For fans of Gram & Emmy Lou, Exile era Stones and any alcohol sozzled country rock band you care to name check.<\/p>\n

The next live act is subject to promise fulfilment. Eggsy <\/strong>from the GLC has told us that as a special treat, instead of DJing this year, he’ll play us an acoustic set. Only Mr Love Eggs himself knows what that entails but I’m sure it’ll be worth the trip up Charles Street.<\/p>\n

We’ll have the usual nibbles and refreshments, The Secret Garden Cafe is making us Record Store Day vinyl cupcakes, we’ll have some give aways and the day wouldn’t be complete without a raffle.<\/p>\n

Future Of The Left<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over 18 only – Record Store Day is an internationally celebrated day observed the third Saturday of April each year. Its purpose, as conceived by independent record store employee Chris Brown, is to celebrate the art of music. The day brings together fans, artists, and hundreds of independent record stores across the world. Spillers was founded in 1894 by Henry Spiller at its original location was in the Queen\u2019s Arcade, Cardiff, where the shop specialised in the sale of phonographs, wax phonograph cylinders and shellac phonograph discs. In the early 1920s, Henry\u2019s son Edward took over the running of the business and, with the aid of the popular accordionist and band leader, Joe Gregory, sold musical instruments alongside the pre-recorded music. In the late 1940s, Henry moved the shop around the corner to a larger premises on The Hayes, where it has happily remained and thrived ever since. Over the years Spillers has seen and supplied many varied types of pre-recorded music. Today we pride ourselves on our diverse selection of music on both compact dics and good old vinyl at very competetive prices.
